Construction Safety Intern

Based in Portland Oregon, we work primarily in the 11-western states with regional offices in Reno, NV; Phoenix, AZ; Los Angeles, CA; Richmond, CA; Salt Lake City, UT.
As a Construction Safety Intern, you will work under an experienced safety professional or safety manager, assisting the safety team on-site to maintain a safe work environment in compliance with safety standards. You’ll gain hands-on experience in construction safety, jobsite operations, and learn effective communication with project teams and field supervision. This internship is designed to support your career and further your path into entry level safety positions.
Full time summer internships are available for 2025, determined by company workload in Portland, OR and Phoenix, AZ. This position is paid hourly with the possibility of overtime as needed. Construction Safety Interns at Harder perform the following daily tasks:
- Learn and apply safety standards and work techniques on jobsites
- Assist with inspections of jobsites, equipment, on-site training, and investigating and authorizing incident reports
- Support direct supervisor in providing guidance to the field on working in confined spaces, hazardous energy controls, fall protection, and scaffolding
- Assist in investigating incidents to determine the origin and root cause and other contributing factors and help prepare written evaluation reports
- Contribute to safety education efforts, including safety awareness, daily and weekly Toolbox Talks,, and site-specific training courses
- Collaborate with the safety team to brainstorm ways to improve safety processes
What you will need to be successful in this role:
- Must be able to meet deadlines – strong organizational and time management skills are essential
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Physical requirements include: walking and standing for extensive amounts of time (4+ hours per day); carrying supplies up to 50lbs regularly
- Comfortable public speaking
- Flexible with work locations, must be able to travel /relocate for the work term
- Must have a valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation to project site
Education/Experience:
- Demonstrated interest in a career in constructions safety
- Preferred degree in construction management or engineering
